Jul. 21st, 2007 11:01 pmHad to bury a little bird today. :(
Was out gardening when I noticed something thrashing around in the lemon tree. I thought maybe it was a couple of birds fighting as they sometimes do but when the trashing continued and nothing flew out of the tree I moved in for a closer look.
Right in the middle of the tree was this poor little blackbird hanging from a branch by its leg. Found a clean rag to wrap it up in while I tried to cut off the branch it was stuck on. Its leg was a little grazed and it had lost a few feathers from all the struggling but other than that seemed pretty healthy apart from being extremely exhausted.
Thought it might get attacked by local cats if I left it out so I found a carboard box to keep it until it recovered and when placing it in their with the rag for warmth I noticed that it had a piece of black cotton wrapped around each foot. Managed to remove the cotton from around its feet and left it in the box in the laundry.
Sadly when I checked on it the next hour it'd passed on. My Mum thinks it probably just died of shock. The problem being that I have no idea how long it was hanging there before I found it. It couldn't have got stuck earlier than sometime today, but as I started gardening at about 1:30pm it could easily have been there for hours.
I ended up wrapping it in the rag and burying it out in the garden. At least then it can be back as one with nature as it belongs .
I'm just glad it was a warm enough day to be out gardening. I hate to think what might have happened to the poor thing if I hadn't found it when I did. I hate to think of any creature suffering but for it to pass away while sleeping isn't the worst outcome I can think of.
Rest in peace little birdy. :(
