New meme from [livejournal.com profile] radio_silent.

What is the soundtrack to your fandom? And why?

While I'm not the most musically inclined person around there are still certain songs that remind me/make me think of certain fandoms or the ships within them.

The Avengers
Because I'm Awesome - The Dollyrots -  I love this song for Mrs. Peel. All the lyrics just fit her perfectly. There's no-one more awesome than Mrs. Peel. :)
My Life Would Suck Without You - Kelly Clarkson (Glee Cast Version) - This is my favourite song for Steed/Peel - both awesome on their own but together they're so much more. It's my greatest fandom wish to one day see a Steed/Peel fanvid made to this song.

Moonlighting
The Tracks Of My Tears - Smokey Robinson and The Miracles - This is very much David's theme. Head over heels for Maddie since the first time he met her all he wants is a little reciprocity. Always the joker on the outside when in reality he's broken inside.

Supernatural
Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult - Dean's favourite Mullet-Rock. The whole spirit of the show can be found in this song.

House
Love Me Dead - Ludo - Thanks to this trailer for the show House always makes me think of this song. It really does fit the character
Teadrop - Massive Attack - The song used for the original theme tune. I love this one for the show a lot more than the replacement score the Australian version of the series has. The whole heartbeat-beat medical angle of the clip fits so much better too.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

The Album - Sometimes a show does it best themselves. This is without a doubt my favourite CD soundtrack of all time. Listening to this one always takes me back to those highschool days of watching Buffy during its initial run and excitedly discussing it the next day with friends. Love it! :D

Life On Mars
The Album - Another official soundtrack done well. I love so many songs on this one - especially those that relate to Sam and his journey trapped in the past. A good driving album which also suits the show really well. :)

Firefly
Defying Gravity - Despite belonging to a completely different fandom Firefly is the one that first comes to mind whenever I hear this song because of this truly brilliant fanvid by [livejournal.com profile] y_fish.

Star Trek XI
Circus - though I never would have thought of it myself a little Britney Spears is just perfect for Captain Kirk. This fanvid by [livejournal.com profile] butterfly  shows exactly what made the latest Star Trek movie so very awesome. And anything that can make you actually enjoy Britney Spears is worth a look. :P

DAY 30: Saddest character death

Perhaps not the saddest death ever, but Jenny's death from Buffy The Vampire Slayer was one of the first character deaths that really got my attention. This was such a big moment when it happened in the show. It was the first big indication of Joss' 'no character is safe' style of storytelling. It also proved exactly how cruel and terrifyingly evil Angel/Angelus could be. While the death itself is more shocking than sad it's the following scenes that bring the sorrow. Having Giles arrive home to the flowers, music and champagne expecting such joy, all the while not knowing that Jenny was already dead, is just heartbreaking to watch. As is the scene in the alley, in the rain, where it's all Buffy can do to try and comfort him and try to stop him from getting himself killed. I love that scene so much. It kills me every time. :(

DAY 29: Current TV show obsession

*I've only see up to 'The Lodger' so no spoilers for the finale please.*

This season of Doctor Who was the one television show I was most excited about this year. I've watched New!Who from the start but never really liked it all that much. The actors were great and some of the stories were very enjoyable but I just don't like RTD's writing. I was more than over the moon when I heard that Stephen Moffat would be taking control of the show this series. I've always loved Moffat's work (see my Press Gang ramblings) and his 'The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances' two-parter is still my favourite New!Who story so far. I wasn't sure how I felt about Matt Smith as Eleven but after seeing the season opener I fell completely in love with him. In that one episode he became my Doctor. So scruffy and twitchy and adorable. Amy is also so very awesome. I love the story of their first meeting, and how she came attached so she spends more of her time kicking butt than pining over The Doctor. (Sure she still tried to jump him that one time but I would have too given the chance. :P) With a few exceptions I've definitely enjoyed this series more than all those before it. From what I've heard the response to the finale has been quite positive and nothing less than I'd expect from the awesomeness of Mr. Moffat. Can't wait to see how it all ends. :D

Also a big thank-you to whomever wrote 'The Lodger' for such blatant fan service.

DAY 28: First TV show obsession

The first show I remember really getting into many years ago was Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I caught this one when it first aired back in 1997 and thought it was awesome. I loved that it was a show about normal kids just trying to get through school who had to deal with normal problems, all the while trying to keep the whole world safe from vampires, demons and all kinds of other monsters. It probably helped that I first started highschool in '97 and was really able to relate to the characters and their more normal trials. I loved being able to grow up with this show through the years. And while I didn't enjoy the later series as much as the earlier ones, it was always well written, funny, full of likeable characters and had moments that shocked, made you laugh and made you cry right up to the end. This show is a classic and always will be. :)

Favourite Characters: Giles, Willow, Spike, Oz
Favourite Episodes: Restless, Hush, Innocence, Halloween, Once More With Feeling (and many, many more :P )

DAY 27: Best pilot episode

Even though it's a few years old now I still think Season 1 of Veronica Mars had one of the strongest first seasons of any television show ever. A lot of that had to do with first episode. There was so much information that needed to be covered in this first episode (Who is Veronica Mars? Why is she the way she is?) including two major season long plot lines (Who murdered her best friend Lily? Who raped Veronica?) and more importantly all the complex social connections between the rich kids, the not so rich kids, the bikers, the local law enforcement, etc. and how Veronica fits into all of it. A nice tight episode that manages to fit in an enormous amount of important information in a way that never makes it feel like boring exposition. I also love how the whole style of the show - from the colouring to the snappy dialogue and the fantastic use of a voice-over - is set up in this episode. Very cleverly written and well worth watching. I love this episode for so perfectly setting up one of the best and most well written television series of the past decade.

"You know what they say. Veronica Mars, she's a marshmallow."

DAY 26: OMG WTF? Season finale

It's hard to talk about OMG WTF television and not mention Lost. While any of the Lost finales (and in fact every Lost episode ever) could easily fit into this category I think I'll always like the Season 3 finale 'Through The Looking Glassthe most. It may not have been the biggest or most exciting of Lost's finales but that final revelation that Jack's flash-back was in fact a flash-forward was a total game changer. The reveal flipped the format of the series upside down and gave the series a fresh new feel just when it needed it the most. I quite like stories like this where they give you an answer before you know the question. Who gets off the island and how? Charlie's 'Not Penny's Boat' message also raised more questions. Who else knew of the island and how/where to find it? A very enjoyable finale that was the first Lost finale that actually had me waiting in anticipation for the next series to start. :)

DAY 25: A show you plan on watching (old or new)

I've heard nothing but great things about Chuck since it first started. I've seen the DVDs in store a couple of times but never bought them. One of our free-to-air stations (99/GO!) finally started airing this show about a month ago. I tuned in to see what all the fuss is about. We're only about 5-6 episodes into the first season but already I'm a little bit in love with Chuck (both the show and the character). Chuck is quite adorable, his sister and Captain Awesome are indeed awesome, the Nerd Herd are a bunch of fun, and who doesn't love Adam Baldwin - especially when he's playing the gruff tough guy. Will definitely keep watching this one. :)

DAY 24: Best quote

It's more than impossible to chose the single best quote in the history of television. This quote from an episode of Castle would be the one that has amused me the most in recent times. What is just a slightly funny quote from the show is made hilarious for those who know Nathan Fillion's history. This may just be my favourite Firefly reference from the show because it really did make me laugh out loud - much to the bemusment of my youngest brother who was watching it with me. :P

Here's a few more that always make me smile.

"I think we're trapped in an allegory." - Moonlighting

"Today I was pompous and my sister was crazy.
Today we were captured by hill-folk never to be seen again.
It was the best day ever." - Firefly (and basically every other line from that show)

"What do we say about the past?"
"It makes an ass out of you and me." - Pushing Daisies

"That's it. No more donuts for Masuka." - Dexter

"Nobody deserves mime, Buffy." - Buffy The Vampire Slayer

"An iPhone is like a penis. Fun to play with when you're on your own, but rude to pull out at the dinner table."
  - Tom Gleeson,
Good News Week

DAY 23: Most annoying character

This one is a tie between Dawn from Buffy and Connor from Angel. Both of these characters had the special ability of annoying the hell out of me any time they were on the screen. This 'verse already went through its teenage stage with the early seasons of Buffy and that was a hell of a lot more maturely played, with a lot less whining and moping. Can't stand either of these characters and personally think both shows would have done just as well if they'd never been introduced.
ozfroggirl: (betterdays)
DAY 22: Favorite series finale

I may be alone in this, but I really loved the series finale of Angel. Angel is probably my least favourite of the three Whedon shows (I've yet to see Dollhouse) but I really enjoyed the shake-up that occurred in this series and the increased darkness and difficulties that the team faced. 'Not Fade Away' was as perfect a finale as Angel could ever have. I liked the hugeness of it (taking down the Circle) and the sheer impossibilty of defeating the Senior Partners but trying anyway for the sack of everything that is right with this world. And I love, love, the idea of all of them living their own perfect day before the battle. Lorne singing, Angel being fatherly with Conner, Gunn going back to his roots and helping at the shelter, Wes taking care of Illyria, and Spike reading his poetry at a club to great acclaim. Both Lindsey's and Wesley's final scenes are heartbreakingly perfect especially with Illyria finally starting to understand the whole humanity thing - "Would you like me to lie to you now?". And the final scene in the alley is just wonderfully epic. The four of them - already not in the best shape - standing together in the rain, about to face hoardes of demons and other evil beings, knowing that they're more than likely all going to be killed just sends chills down my spine. The way that they just grit their teeth and hold out with the tiniest bit of hope is as inspiring as anything you're likely to see in any big blockbuster epic (like LotR). I also very much love the idea of cutting to black and leaving the ending open. It gives the viewer something to think about and lets them chose their own ending. I love that idea - provided it's executed well - and with this I think it has been. :)

"Well, personally...I kinda wanna slay the dragon."
ozfroggirl: (pgromance)
DAY 21: Favorite ship

Following on from yesterday, in one of the hardest decisions so far, Spike and Lynda from Press Gang would have to be my favourite ship. While these two may seem like just another David and Maddie Moonlighting clone I actually prefer their relationship to the one it was based on. Maybe it's the fact that they are teenagers (and didn't have to deal with complex issues such as pregnancy and marriage) but something about these two made their relationship seem rawer and almost more pure than most. I love that nothing was ever easy for them and I love how epic their relationship turned out to be over a tiny forty-odd half hour episodes. The scene (actually the whole episode) where Spike first tells Lynda that he loves her just kills me every time I watch it (as does every subsequent admission  - each one more heartbreaking than the last). Spike's absolute devotion to Lynda, no matter how many times she hurts him or knocks him down, is just gorgeous on his end. Constantly being there for her and trying to bring out her humanity and help her be a better person is so utterly romantic it makes my heart melt. I"m not ashamed to admit that Spike Thomson was always going to be my future husband. I also adore the way the final episode played out, and in particular that final scene. The whole Spike not wanting to kiss Lynda because he's afraid that he'll wake up and then kissing her anyway. Just perfect. ♥

DAY 20: Favorite kiss

I never thought I'd find this clip online with me and my obscure fandom love. My favourite kiss of all is Spike and Lynda's first real kiss from Press Gang. There's just so much I love about this one. I just love the tension and the build-up, and what a big moment this was for both characters - Lynda finally admitting that she's interested in him and Spike finally winning the girl of his dreams, as the title of the episode ('At Last A Dragon') suggests. I really adore Spike's 'that's just the world moving' line and I love how a moment like this is even possible on a children's television program (even if they did get into trouble over the 'use of tongue'). Much love all around. :D

ozfroggirl: (teamfirefly)
DAY 19: Best TV show cast

Not much to say here except I love everyone of these actors and the way they made their own characters so endearing in their own individual ways. It's not often I love every single character in a TV show but Firefly was probably the first for me (Pushing Daisies would be another). Even the secondary/guest characters such as Badger and Saffron were fantastic and played to perfection by the actors cast. I just love how well these nine people get along so well with each other both on and off screen It's a tribute to this amazing cast that the show and all its characters are so well loved and enduring for so few episodes made. :)
ozfroggirl: (dexkillroom)
DAY 18: Favorite title sequence

When the main character in your show is a sociopathic serial killer you really need the opening title sequence to be something special and a little different. The title sequence needs to be something that won't repulse/alienate new viewers and clever and intriguing enough to catch people's attention. This title sequence is so brilliant it's almost art. I love every single frame of it and how it makes the most mundane of actions seem so sinister in context. I have a few friends who love watching Dexter but can't watch the titles. I love that. :D

ozfroggirl: (journeyon)
DAY 17: Favorite mini series

If it hasn't become apparent already I love a good musical, and Blackpool is exactly that. Blackpool is centred around Ripley Holden, a local businessman, who has great plans to turn his little games arcade into a flashy casino hotel. With a troubled young son, rebellious daughter and a neglected wife, Ripley's life starts to spiral out of control when the body of young man is found dumped in his arcade. Detective Peter Carlisle, sent to investigate the case, only makes matters worse when he falls for Ripley's wife and basically makes Ripley's life a living hell. The highlight of the series is the way it uses extremely entertaining song and dance numbers to great effect to illustrate exactly how the characters are feeling and what they're going through. Blackpool is the greatest drama-thriller-musical you're ever likely to see. This is the type of show I wished Glee could be. Also it's the best place to see David Tennant singing and dancing and putting things in his mouth.

DAY 16: Your guilty pleasure show

Does a show still count as a guilty pleasure if it was canceled over 20 years ago? I sure hope so because Moonlighting is mine. Moonlighting is a show from the late 80's centered around Maddie Hayes, a former model, who finds herself bankrupt and ends up teaming up with streetwise private eye, David Addison, to earn a living by solving all manner of crazy cases. This show hits so many of my TV watching kinks it's not funny - witty banter, UST (with plenty of T), a great sense of humour, clever breakages of the 'forth wall', random song and dance numbers, special episodes and just general silliness. Moonlighting never fails to make me smile. The show can also do the serious drama too though and David and Maddie were my first true ship. There's so many moments throughout the series between these two that I could watch forever. They just make my heart sigh ♥. I still maintain that their eventual hook-up was the greatest in TV history because of who they were and how it all happened (I could really care less if everything went to hell after that). There's a reason so many shows were modeled after Moonlighting's winning formula (Press Gang, The X-Files, Bones and Castle to name a few) and it's mostly because of the chemistry and complicated relationship of these two. Moonlighting is tons of fun and worth looking into just to see Bruce Willis (looking very fine with a full head of hair) as a brilliant comic actor before he became a huge movie star with Die Hard.

(I managed to restrain myself to only include two clips in this post :P)

ozfroggirl: (avengers emma phone)
DAY 15: Favorite female character

Mrs. Emma Peel from The Avengers. A recent find of mine but Mrs. Peel is easily my favourite female character of all time. It's going to take something very special to knock her off the top of my list. Mrs. Peel is a strong, smart and independent woman who is all class and can be fantastically cheeky when the mood strikes her. She lives in a stylish apartment, drives a convertible and owns a wardrobe to die for. Recruited by special agent John Steed to help him solve mysterious murders and protect their beloved England. Proficient in all manner of firearms and a skilled fencer, Mrs. Peel knows how to handle herself in a fight having had training in both Karate and Kung Fu. Before meeting Steed Mrs. Peel proved she was more than a pretty face by becoming the Chairman of her father's corporation, and successfully running it, at the tender age of 21. She's often able to use her intelligence to solve the cases and to outwit and outfox the diabolical mastermind of the moment. Nothing ever fazes her and she never shows any fear to the enemy - even when constrained and seconds from death. Mr. Peel also knows how to have fun. She loves chocolates, champagne and is always up for a party. If ever there was a more perfect role model for women everywhere (and every time) I've yet to find it. :)

ozfroggirl: (teamfirefly)
DAY 14: Favorite male character

Nothing too deep here. Malcolm Reynolds is the captain of the spaceship Serenity from the TV show Firefly. Tough and war-hardened, Mal is a man who's not afraid to shoot first and do what he has to to get the job done and get paid. He's not a hero, just a man dong what he knows is right to keep himself and his crew alive and safe and free to live the way they want to. I like that the character is flawed - he's good with a gun but is a complete idiot with the ladies, and his plans aren't always the best thought out/he doesn't always make the right decisions. Luckily he has a loyal crew - really a second family - to help him out when things don't go his way, and to bring out his softer side. It also helps that he's just so very pretty. :)

ozfroggirl: (red-eyed)
DAY 13: Favorite childhood show

Being a child of the '80's it's hard to talk about my childhood without mentioning Fraggle Rock. I simply loved this show as a kid, and there's plenty to love. Awesome puppets, catchy songs and storylines that didn't treat the audience like they were babies. What happened to children's programs like this that were enjoyable to both kids and adults alike? There needs to be more smart programming like this made for the children of today. :)

ozfroggirl: (who'd clean up the mess?)
DAY 12: An episode you've watched more than 5 times

I could have chosen many different episodes from many different shows for this one. I love Red Dwarf in particular because it's short and funny so you can always put an episode on even if you don't have a lot of time to spare. I will always have a fondness for the earlier seasons - even if they were mostly gray. 'Thanks For The Memories' is one of my favourites. After a night of partying the crew wakes to find that two of them have broken legs, a jigsaw puzzle has been completed and four days are missing from their memories. Set in two time-lines - the present and the past - this episode is a funny and surprisingly touching journey to discover exactly what happened in those four 'missing' days. Love it. :)
