Saw 'Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End' today. It's an OK movie but I didn't find it anywhere near as enjoyable as the first - or even the second one.

First thing I'll say is that it's definately not a kids film. It was a lot more graphic than the second film and I could see certain scenes being extremely terrifying for younger people.

I thought the whole movie was much longer than it needed to be. The start of the movie was way too slow and it took what seemed like forever to get into the real meat of the story. It was also quite predictable and a few key plot points were introduced way too early ultimately leaving no surprises for later in the film.

The whole Calypso storyline was completely unecessary. For me it didn't add to the emotion of the story and did nothing to further the main plot at all. You could edit the whole thing out of the movie and not lose anything remotely important.

I never thought I say this but I also think there was too much Jack Sparrow. I have no idea what they were thinking there. I get that they probably think that more Captain Jack equals more fun and more money but it was a little ridiculous. One of the main reasons that Jack is so popular is that you never know what he's thinking or what he'll try to pull next. It's the quirkiness and the mystery of the character that makes it work so well. What they do in the movie kind of spoils that. The shirtles Depp is almost not worth it.

Also think they were trying to be too clever with all the little self referential lines (eg talking about the rum, Jack's last lines) but saldy they were poorly done. They way they were added into the script made it look more like they were rehashing fan favourite moments to keep the people happy - playing for the cheap laughs. I did enjoy the symmetry of the reintroduction of Captain Jack on the Pearl though.

The acting was quite good all round but the actors seemed let down by a seemly poorly written script. Some of the dialogue I found pretty cringeworthy (Most of Will's lines in the final battle scene for instance) and didn't fit the characters at all.

Don't get me started on the character deaths either. None of them worked for me at all - except maybe the last one. Most were executed (hee) badly and again didn't lead to anything. There was no reason for most and they didn't lead to any plot points or character development. A big waste of time really.

Once the film started up for real though I did start to get into it. I quite liked the Keith Richards cameo. I wasn't too sure about it when the announced it as I couldn't see how it could work, but Keith played it well. I'm not sure I can see him as Jack's father (there wasn't really any chemistry between the two) but I could see him as a rather cracking pirate.

I liked pretty much everything after that scene. The special effects were truly brilliant, if a little over the top at times, but the final battle scene was quite amazing to watch. I know some people will disagree but I did like the way they tied up Jack's, Will's and Elizabeth's stories. The only moments when I felt the characters were true to their first movie counterparts.

I don't think I'd pay to see it again though I'll probably end up getting it on DVD.

I think I'd probably give it a 6/10. If you're a fan of the series go ahead and watch it, just don't expect too much. And as always stay to the end of the credits, even if they're almost as long as the movie itself. They've added a extra little epilogue clip thing again.

I found the whole thing completely baffling. Where we saw it, there was an intermission half way through, and everyone en masse turned to who they were with an went 'do you understand what's going on?'. Not a clue what most of it was about, my most pressing question being, how on earth did Davey Jones fall in love with Calypso in the first place if, before she was bound, she was nothing but crabs and wind?!

I disliked that storyline so much I didn't even think of that. Maybe it was she who fell in love with him first and was able to take human form herself to be with him before she was bound.

And really what was up with the crabs anyway? The only reason I can see them doing that was to reinforce that it was her that brought Jack and the Pearl to them in Davey Jones locker.

We just ended up giggling on the speculation that the real reason her and Davey broke up was that he gave her crabs. :D
