DAY 11: A show that disappointed you

I wanted to love this show I really did, as there's nothing I love more than a good musical. While the first part of the season was quite good and enjoyable for me the show seems to have lost its way in the new episodes this year.Too many inconsistencies in the writing, both with the characters and the storylines changing week to week, so much so that nothing that happens really matters anymore. It seems to me that rather than chose songs to suit the characters and stories they are instead changing the stories and characters to suit the songs. That makes it very hard for me to care about anything or anyone. The theme of the week thing is also starting to annoy me with the themes being constantly mentioned by characters (ie dreams, home, reputation) Subtlety is the key. I don't think this show has really bettered itself since the pilot - which rocked so very hard - and that makes me sad. :(

DAY 10: A show you thought you wouldn't like but ended up loving

Most recently that would have to be The Big Bang Theory. When I first heard about the idea for this show I thought it would be awkward and embarrassing and stereotypically insulting. While the first season did have more than a few moments like this the second series turned out to be comedy gold. All the characters were able to grow into their own and become more than just their stereotypes - including Penny - leading to some wonderfully funny and at times touching moments. Of course Sheldon is a favourite but all the characters are funny and interesting in their own unique ways and the show just wouldn't work without a single one of them. Favourite moment - any time Penny and Sheldon are together. Their relationship is just so sweet and adorable. :)

DAY 09: Best scene ever

Another one that was very hard to pick. Do you go for the serious and dramatic, or fall-back on the funny. Most of the favourite scenes that I could think of all had an element of humour in them. This scene from Life On Mars is maybe the most memorable. Best moment - Gene Hunt kicking in the nonce and them both waving for the camera. One of my favourite things about Life On Mars is that it was able to have moments like this simply because of the whole initial premise. Has Sam travelled back in time, is he stuck in a crazy coma-dream or has he simply gone insane. In a show where no ground rules have been set and neither the main characters nor the viewers have any idea what is real and what's not, anything is possible. :D

DAY 08: A show everyone should watch

The Avengers is one of the greatest older shows that you've probably never seen. Part James Bond, part Doctor Who this show is still huge amounts of fun despite the fact that it's over 40 years old. I can only really speak for the colour series of 1967, where the main character secret agent (and perfect English gentleman) John Steed teams up with the young and brilliant Mrs. Emma Peel, but those 25 episodes alone are enough to have me highly recommend this show to anyone and everyone. Sure some of the storylines are a bit aged and the special effects and 'advanced technology' are hilariously bad by today's standards, but that all really just ads to the old-school charm of the show. Both Steed and Mrs. Peel are good, strong characters acted to perfection by the actors and the relationship shared between these two characters alone makes the show worth watching. With superbly written dialogue, no swearing, no blood (there's plenty of violence), plenty of champagne and villians who try to conquer the world - or at least the UK - by using shrinking machines, invisible men, robot soldiers, hallucinogenic drugs and bodyswap machines this show is an absolute delight from beginning to end. :)

There are a few episodes avaliable on YouTube but the selection is pretty random. This is one of my favourites that has been uploaded. Go watch it now! :D

DAY 07: Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show

The only thing harder than picking a favourite episode of Firefly is picking a least favourite. For me though I'd have to say that would be 'Heart Of Gold'. Not that the episode isn't great in its own right, but the more westerny themes and storyline just doesn't appeal to me so much. I'm a sci-fi girl through and through. And while this episode may not be my favourite I still love the developments in the Mal/Inara relationship ("I've been waiting for you to kiss me since I showed you my guns"), Wash & Zoe's discussion about having a family and this exchange:

"Wash, tell me I'm pretty."
"Were I unwed I would take you in a manly fashion."
"Because I'm pretty?"
"Because you're pretty."

DAY 06: Favorite episode of your favorite TV show

When I first saw Firefly I missed the first few episodes - I remember seeing 'Shindig', being really confused, and wondering why people thought the show was so wonderful. As a result 'Our Mrs Reynolds' was the first episode where I really 'got' Firefly and fell completely in love with the show and all its characters. The fact that I'm a sucker for sillier more humor filled episodes also helps. I still love this episode and it has so many amazing moments and lines. Love the opening wagon ambush "If I could make you prettier I would", "I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you", the partying "How drunk was I?" "I dunno, I passed out", "Someone tries to kill you, you kill 'em right back", the 'special' hell, Vera, "Whoa, good bible!", "Whoa, good myth", "You woulda kissed her too", Wash and Kaylee geeking out engineering style, Vera lending a hand, and the classic Mal ending "I knew you let her kiss you". So much love. ♥

DAY 05: A show you hate

There aren't really any TV shows that I hate - if I don't like, or am not interested in, a TV show I just don't watch it. However, one show that would be on the bottom of my watch-list would be Two And A Half Men. I just don't get it. It's not funny and I can't understand how its lasted as long as it has, and is popular enough that Charlie Sheen has signed up for another 2 seasons.

DAY 04: Your favorite show ever

This could really have been a number of different shows. It's more than impossible to pick a favourite TV series of all time but, following on from yesterday, Firefly definitely deserves a huge mention. Part science fiction/part western Firefly is the story of nine different people who travel together through space in a Firefly class spaceship doing any kind of jobs they can in order to keep flying and remain free from the conformities of  the modern system of government. With its strong and nuanced characters and clever writing Firefly is quite easily my favourite Whedon venture despite its very short run. That's not to say that I dislike the rest of Whedon's work, there's just something about the heart of this show and it's idea of freedom, and what that means, that really speaks to me. While Buffy will always be my first love Firefly is my true love.

Warning: This video contains some spoilers for both Firefly and the movie Serenity.

DAY 03: Your favorite new show (aired this TV season)

It may not have started new this season but my favourite 'new' show is Castle. I'm not necessarily a fan of crime procedurals but I've been enjoying this one a lot more than Bones recently. On the face of it it's just another case of guy and girl - in this case a mystery novel writer and a homicide detective - who despite having very different ways of doing things team up together to solve crimes. I only gave this show a shot because it had Nathan Fillion as one of the leads but I'm glad I did because it's cute and rather funny. Sure the cases can be a bit predictable at times but all the characters are fun and interesting in their own ways. And while the main focus is generally on the simmering UST between Castle and Beckett it's Castle's home-life and his relationship with his daughter and mother that provides the heart for the show. The young actress who plays Castle's daughter is amazing. Also Castle is one of those shows that never takes itself too seriously and has actually included more than a few nods and in-jokes relating to previous roles that the actors have played, the greatest of which has to be this one.

Finally, I can't help but love a show which after having the main character write a novel based on his new muse, Detective Kate Beckett, then hires a ghostwriter to actually write said novel and release it as a promotional tie-in. The fact that Nathan Fillion attended a few book launches and performed book signings as his character Richard Castle is just insanely awesome. A second novel is due out later this year. :D

DAY 02: A show you wish more people were watching

QI, short for Quite Interesting, is exactly that. Another one of those 30min themed comedy-panel-quiz type shows, this one focuses on obscure and bizarre trivia and revels in debunking common misconceptions and myths. Hosted by the amazing Stephen Fry doing what he does best, and joined by comedian Alan Davies as regular panelist, each week 3 celebrity guests compete in this quest for knowledge. Points are regularly awarded for clever and funny answers rather than the correct ones and contestants more often than not end up with final scores in the negatives. This is a never miss show for me and the fact that it easily manages to be both educational and highly entertaining at the same time is just wonderful. :D

From [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r  - a 30 days of TV meme.

DAY 01: A show that never should have been canceled

It was smart and quirky and just so very pretty. The story of a pie-maker with the ability to raise the dead with a touch for 60 seconds - any longer and someone else dies instead - and the interesting people he works with. These included a snarky private-eye who learns his secret and uses it to solve help cases, the adorable and eternally optimistic waitress who works at his pie store and has a huge crush on him, and his childhood sweetheart who he revives but cannot ever touch - a second touch returns the person to death forever. This show had everything I love - including random musical numbers. Admittedly it did get a second season, but that was canceled just as the core storyline was getting really, really interesting. If I could bring any show back it would be this one. :)

My Five Themes/Kinks )

This one took much longer than it should have (our computer basically having a stroke a few weeks back didn't help) though was still mega amounts of fun to make. :)

Finally, here for your enjoyment a The Avengers Mood Theme.
Centered on Steed and Mrs Peel - the colour episodes only - it will work for all accounts.

You can preview the whole theme here.

Download this zipped file if you'd like to use it. Credit on your userinfo page is a must - just because these things take a huge amount of time and effort to put together. Other than that, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do. :)

Also [livejournal.com profile] lidi has posted a great walkthrough on how to set up a custom moodtheme here which I'm sure she wouldn't mind me linking to.

EDIT: If you're having trouble getting this moodtheme to work it must be noted that all the picture files in that zip are .png and not .jpg
You will have to change that as well if you're using the moodtheme instructions linked above. Took me far too long to work out that was why my attempts weren't working. *headdesk*

Wil Anderson and Adam Spencer both on this week's Good News Week!

I'm really back to loving the show this year. Peter Burner, Tim Ferguson, Jean Kittson, Julia Zemiro, all the oldies are coming back. I'm still waiting for Richard Fidler though. He's always great - and does deserve a right-of-reply after all the bagging Paul and Tim gave him. :D
